[Article]Kim Hyun Joong and Kim Jae Joong Show Off How They’re Big BFFs
By : KimKim Hyun Joong showed how thankful he was toward his friend of 10 years, Kim Jae Joong.
JYJ’s Kim Jae Joong made a surprise appearance on the April 14 broadcast of MBC’s K-Pop Stars Take Over the World-Lucky Guy Kim Hyun Joong.
This day, Kim Hyun Joong was shown heading to a bar in Gangnam after finishing his day’s schedule. The one waiting for him there turned out to be JYJ’s Kim Jae Joong. The two are known to be so close they once even lived together in the same house, and even occasionally go on overseas trips together whenever they can find time in their schedules.
Kim Hyun Joong said, “We lived together for about a year, but because Jae Joong hyung (big brother) had schedules in Japan and I went overseas a lot, we only saw each other at home for about one or two months.” Although they didn’t get to see each other much, their friendship, which started since the beginnings of their careers, gave them strength with its existence.
“When I was having a hard time Jae Joong hyung once left a letter next to my pillow,” Kim Hyun Joong said. “It told me not to drink too much and instead to talk it out. I still have that letter.”
To this Kim Jae Joong said, “I wrote a letter and I got a response. It said he was sorry he didn’t get to do much for me and that he was thankful. Do you remember?” Kim Jae Joong said he still had that letter also, and laughed in embarrassment, saying, “These men, writing letters to each other….”
The two were signed with different agencies and were active in different groups, but both said, “Although we were in different teams, we were able to depend on each other a lot. There are things you can’t talk about [with your own members] because you’re in the same team.”
The two had more in common because they were both singers who ventured into acting. “Our conversations flow smoothly. There’s the type of music I want to work with, the music I work with now and Kim Jae Joong’s music. We could swap, and I could change because of that. When I ask him to write me a song over the phone, he immediately does so,” Kim Hyun Joong said in thanks.
He then added, “They talk about Asia stars and the Korean wave, but I feel like I’m trapped. I could be saying this because I’m young but…,” showing the pressure he felt about the title of hallyu star and the great attention he’s receiving. He and Kim Jae Joong could talk about such feelings because they had both gone through it, and this helped them depend on each other.
After the broadcast, viewers left comments such as, ‘I knew they were close, but it’s more touching to see it on TV’ and ‘These friends exchange letters. That’s cool and cute at the same time’.

[Article]Kim Hyun Joong-How Korean TV drama ‘Playful Kiss’ flopped locally but hit globally
By : KimEvery TV network executive in Burbank cries into their organic kombucha from time to time about the great show that just couldn’t find an audience, whether it be from unlucky scheduling quirks or creative concepts that were just too far ahead of their time.
And it’s not just a domestic issue — the producers of Korea’s Playful Kiss saw their youth drama succumb to an inauspiciously short local-TV run back in the fall of 2010, going up against hit time-period competition from My Girlfriend is a Gumiho (“Gumiho” translates into “nine-tailed fox,” a Chinese mythic figure, if that helps).
Like Terra Nova, that Knight Rider remake a few years back, or any show starring Christian Slater, Playful Kiss might have been headed to the junk pile of so-called “broken series” — shows that made it past the pilot stage but didn’t live long enough to accumulate a syndication library. But Playful Kiss is proving to be more like Arrested Development, a low-rated but critically beloved Fox comedy that was such a popular streaming choice on Netflix, the company decided last year to resume production of the show.
Through global TV streaming service ViKi, Playful Kiss has become somewhat of a worldwide sensation, garnering a loyal audience of nearly 7 million viewers and more than recouping a modest production spend of under $1 million several million dollars to make 16 episodes.
According to Razmig Hovaghimian, CEO of ViKi, which is based in Singapore but keeps an office near its Bay Area funding, the show has been streamed more than 70 million times by ViKi users, about 1,400 of whom have used the site’s innovative group subtitling tool to translate the show into 56 languages.
The series, about a quirky high school girl whose family moves into the home of a popular boy she has a crush on following an earthquake, has garnered an audience that’s 70 percent non-Asian, Hovaghimian said. Ample viewership, for example, has come through a ViKi syndication partnership with Hulu in the U.S., while producer Group 8 has already worked with YouTube on a follow-up digital series.
Supplied to ViKi under barter advertising terms, Group 8 has recouped $400,000 in ad revenue to date through the service, while the global exposure of the series has enabled the company to take in another $3.5 million through a dozen foreign broadcast deals.
Sums up Group 8 CEO Song Byung Joon: ”ViKi helped Playful Kiss find its audience.”

[News] Kim Hyun Joong to host fan meet with a talk show format
By : 4DKyutie501Hallyu star Kim Hyun Joong will be holding his first fan meet of the year on January 21st at Jamsil Indoor Stadium in Seoul. And although there is a fee to get in, it will only cost fans around $17 USD.
It’s been announced that the entrance fee will amount to roughly $17 USD per attendee. Rather than being held at a small-scale venue, the fan meet is being held at Jamsil Stadium, which can seat over 7,000 people.
The fan meet will be different from ordinary fan meets and the format will feel more like a talk show. Kim Hyun Joong will also be performing ten songs total from his first mini album ‘Breakdown‘ and his second mini-album ‘Lucky‘. To be honest, the fan meet is no different from a small concert.
Korean artists who use the facility and all of its lighting and sound equipment charge an entrance fee of anywhere between 40~70 USD, but Kim Hyun Joong is not even charging half that. He may break even if lucky, but will most likely lose money over the event.
Key East Entertainment‘s Music Business Director Kang In Suk remarked, “Honestly, the fan meet is no different from a small independent concert, but we are proceeding because Kim Hyun Joong requested that we do it this way. We will not be making any money, and we are thinking of it as a special service for the fans.”
The fan meet was also scheduled abruptly without much notice, and the reason for that is Kim Hyun Joong will be spending a lot of time in Japan this year promoting his music. He did not want his Korean fans to feel disappointed, and is starting the new year off right by greeting them first.
Kim Hyun Joong’s love for his fans does not stop there. A large corporation had proposed to do a promotion with the singer, but Kim Hyun Joong refused. Director Kang explained, “He did not want the fans to spend their money so that he could earn some more money.”
Since his debut with SS501, Kim Hyun Joong has been known for being unique and being a man of his word. And even at super stardom, he has not changed a bit. He is aware that it is the fans that made him into who he is today, and his love for them is unparalleled.
Director Kang remarked, “From the agency’s point of view, we know the company could benefit a lot more if he would give in, and it’s too bad. However when I look at him as just another person, he is truly a real, unwavering man of his word,” and gave a thumbs up.
Meanwhile, it was recently discovered that the singer also donated over $80,000 to a good cause without even telling his agency. Compared to other celebrities that announce their charity work through press releases, Kim Hyun Joong is an admirable young man.

It was reported that hallyu star Kim Hyun Joong has great love for his fans.
Kim Hyun Joong will hold the first fan meeting of the new year on Jan 21.
This fan-meet will be ticketed but the admission ticket is only priced at 20,000 won.
If it was a small fan meeting, the admission could be free. However, Kim Hyun Joong's fan meeting will be held at the Jamsil Indoor Stadium, which is a large scale venue and can hold more than 7,000 people.
Besides, unlike the usual talk-show style fan-meet, Kim Hyun Joong will sing more than 10 songs, including 'Break Down' from his 1st mini album and the songs from the 2nd mini ablum, 'Lucky', at this fan meeting. It is virtually the same as his solo concert.
Other Korean singers who hold concerts at the Jamsil Indoor Stadium charge admission fees from between 50,000 won and 90,000 won. However the admission fee for Kim Hyun Joong's fan meeting is just 20,000 won and is less than half charged by other singers; the fan meeting is expected to rake in no profit at best, or even make a loss.
Kang In Suk, the director of music enterprise department of Kim's agency, Keyeast, explained that the fan meeting is virtually the same as a small-scale solo concert, but it was brought forward at Kim Hyun Joong's request. It will be a fan service and one that almost makes no money.
This fan meeting was abruptly decided to be held. The fan meeting for Korean fans was arranged as the first schedule (activity) of 2012 because Kim Hyun Joong didn't want to make his Korean fans disappointed by his new year's promotion in Japan.
Kim Hyun Joong's love for his fans is more than just this. One company suggested large amounts of money to promote its product at his fan meeting, but it was refused. The director Kang said it was because Kim Hyun Joong insisted he could not possibly make his fans spend their money for his own interests.
Kim Hyun Joong has been famous as an idol singer with his unique manners and opinions since he started as a member of SS501. Kim Hyun Joong never lost his own unique colour of character and it shows in his great love for fans who (are believed by Kim to) make him the person he is today.
Director Kang praised Kim Hyun Joong and said that from the point of view of the agency, which needs to pursue practical interests, it would leave much to be desired, but as a 'man', he is great.
Meanwhile, it has been reported that Kim Hyun Joong secretly donated $100,000 to the Red Cross and an organization that passes out briquettes. Compared to other celebrities who would use the small amount of donation as a massive self-promotion, Kim Hyun Joong's step is admirable.
As for the head of Kim's agency and the father of Hallyu star, Bae Yong Joon, Kim Hyun Joong's actions is probably going to make Bae tear up for making the agency spend money for Kim's fans.
