[Interview] Heo Young Saeng discusses his solo debut and SS501’s future
As the lead vocalist of SS501, many thought he’d be going with a traditional ballad, but he turned the table by coming out with a medium tempo dance track that’s ranking in on the charts. The song was even nominated for the “Music Bank” ‘K-Chart’ on the 20th.
The singer recently sat down for an interview with Kuki News to discuss both his solo debut and SS501. He began, “My goal was to get my name out there. They recognize me as an SS501 member, but they don’t really know who Heo Young Saeng is. I let go of all of my greed and released my album for that sole purpose, so it feels both surreal and joyful to be receiving such an unexpected amount of love. When I heard that I was nominated for first place, I was personally very surprised.”
When asked why he opted to go for a dance track as opposed to a ballad, he explained, “When I was wondering what image to make my debut as a solo singer with, I encountered ‘Let It Go‘. I, too, thought that a ballad would fit me better, but the moment I heard the song, I didn’t think it’d be so bad to show something unexpected instead. I worked hard to able to hear from people, ‘Heo Young Saeng matches this type of songs too.’”
At the mention of his fellow SS501 solo debuts, he said, “It’s not a competition against the other SS501 members, but rather a fight against myself. I never thought of competing against them because it was more important for me to put out an album that satisfied me. I did work hard for this, but there’s still a lot of disappointment left, as if I could’ve done better. I’m really thankful for my SS501 members for visiting my debut stage and sending text messages of support.”
The members may be in separate companies now, but he assured fans that they were all waiting for the day that the five of them would be back together. In order to prepare for that day, they never use the term ‘disbandment’.
He revealed, “A lot of people say that it was because one member brought about discord or so and so betrayed so and so, but it’s all different from the truth. It’s not like we can clarify every single rumor that comes about… It’s really frustrating and disappointing, but I’m just waiting for the day where all five of us come together again and put those rumors to rest. In order to prepare for that day, we never let the word ‘disbandment’ come out of our mouths. We all have our own situations, so we can’t put out an album or open a concert immediately – however, we do promise to become an SS501 that will continue to do our best in the positions we’re in and provide entertainment for our fans.”

Heo YoungSaeng said through his own twitter on 8-June at about 2am “Today is SS501 6thanniversary! Time flies. Memories of us crying because we realized our dreams 6 years ago. Even though we cried while saying ‘it’s great’, let’s strive on since we’ve realized the dream! SS501! Don’t forget the meaning of our group name everyone”
Their group name ‘SS501’ stands for ‘Super star, 5 members always together as 1’.
Kim KyuJong also expressed his thoughts through his twitter “Time flies, our debut, our excitedness and neverousness on 8th June 2005, it feels like it was just yesterday that we cried, and flew by so quickly. 501! Really thank you. Thanks to pretties too! SS501 Hurray!”
Kim HyungJun also wrote his thoughts down “8th June 2005, and today. I hope that in the future we will only be filled with better things and supporting and loving each other. SS501 Hwaiting. Thank you to everyone and I love you”
SS501 debuted on 8-June-2005 with 5 members, Kim HyunJoong, Heo YoungSaeng, Park JungMin, Kim KyuJong and Kim HyungJun, and released their first single ‘1st SS501’.
Fans responded “I will continue to support you in the future too”, “Happy 6th anniversary”, “I love you oppa-deul”, etc.
SS501 is currently engaged in their individual activities such as radio DJ, musical actor, actor, etc.

Young Saeng wrote, “Today is SS501’s sixth anniversary! Time flies so fast. I remember crying six years ago because I had finally achieved my dream of becoming a singer. I kept saying, ‘This is great’, even while crying. Since we’ve achieved our dreams, let’s strengthen up! SS501! Let no one forget the meaning of our name!”
Meanwhile, Kyu Jong mused, “Time really does fly fast. It feels like just yesterday that we were all so excited and nervous over our debut on June 8th, 2005. It feels like we were crying only yesterday, and now we’re already here. 5-idols, thank you so much! Really, thank you. And to all of the pretties, thank you! SS501 hooray!”
Hyung Jun also tweeted, “June 8th, 2005, and today. I hope that we’re met with good things and continue to love and support each other. SS501, fighting. I love and thank everyone.”
Beaming, fans replied back, “We will always support you”, “Congratulations on your sixth anniversary”, and “We love you!”

SHINee has been chosen by online users of RPP (Radio Programas del Peru one of the most important news sources in Peru) as the Best K Pop Band of 2010.
They competed among bands as Super Junior and JYJ.
The SHINee boys got the first place with 42970 points, the second place was to SS501 with 37740 points, followed by JYJ with 24500 points.
The 4th place was for Super Junior with 23710 points, and finally MBLAQ completes the Top 5 with 22260 points.
The 6th place was for CN Blue with 19400 points, followed closely by FT Island with 18760 points. The last three places went to 2PM (18280), B2ST (9990) and Big Bang (9620).

Male group SS501 is accelerating into their solo activities. After their exclusive contract ended with DSP Media last year, each of them moved to a new company, SS501 members are returning as solo singers one by one this year.
Coming in first is Park JungMin who released his solo album ‘Not Alone’ on 20-Jan. Even though his influence is not as great as when all members are together, he quench the thrist of fans who have been waiting for SS501 and gained popularity.
Magnae of the group Kim HyungJun took over the baton and will be making his comeback on 8-Mar. With the upcoming solo album release, he pre-released his new song ‘Girl’ on 28-Feb, determined to leave a deep impression on fans with ‘Solo Kim HyungJun’ through this solo activities.
Kim HyungJun is preparing for a large-scale promotional activities in Asia regions including Japan, along with his local activities.
SS501′s main vocal Heo YoungSaeng, who possesses great singing ability like none other, is also making his solo comeback soon. Originally set to make his comeback by end Feb, Heo YoungSaeng is planning to release his solo album in mid-March. Heo YoungSaeng’s agency B2M Entertainment spokesperson said to Newsen “Even though we have not decided on the comeback date yet, we are planning for his comeback in mid of March and is preparing for the performance.”
Heo YoungSaeng, with just the right mix of his captivating voice and polished dance skills from activities during SS501 time, he will be showing his best ability.
Leader of the group, Kim HyunJoong is also aiming for a comeback in May, and is currently producing his album. KeyEast spokesperson who met with us recently said “Kim HyunJoong is concentrating on the production of his solo album in order for his comeback in May. Currently we are collecting songs and are doing various production works, he is devoting himself to his solo album.”
With these, SS501 who is being loved as a member of a group having friendly competition, is expected to begin some rivalry among themselves for the time being.

[News] SS501’s Kim Kyu Jong on acting, his group, and their new album
After parting ways with DSP Media last year, the members of SS501 have demonstrated what it was like to be ’separate but together’. Kim Hyun Joong has established himself as an actor, and Park Jung Min returned with his first solo album, “Not Alone“.
Kim Kyu Jong is also standing before the starting line of his new acting career after he joined B2M Entertainment, the agency of fellow member Heo Young Saeng.
The aspiring actor recently took part in an interview with Daily Sports and revealed that he will be working against his 'flower boy' charms in an attempt to become a more skilled actor.

Q. “How’s it like working on your own now?”
Kyu Jong: “It makes me think a lot about being with my members. We used to joke and play around without rest, but now that I’m alone, the feeling’s difficult to express. It feels kind of empty.”
Q. “Are you studying acting now?”
Kyu Jong: “I get trained about two to three times a week for two hours at a time. When I was with SS501, I received some acting experiences through music videos and variety programs; now that I’m entering the world of professionals, I have to do it properly. There’s a lot of pressure, but my eyes have been opened to the charms of acting, and I’m full with excitement. There’s a drama I’m currently in discussions for, so the decision will be out soon.”
Q. “What kind of actor do you want to become?”
Kyu Jong: “I want to succeed with my skills, not with my 'flower boy' image. I am a part of a ‘flower boy’ group, but that doesn’t make me one. …I’m planning to prepare myself so that I can act in a way that delivers my emotions to the audience. I love actor Ha Jung Woo’s acting, so I study his works a lot. He’s especially amazing in the movie, ‘Amazing Day.’”
Q. “Do you meet with the SS501 members often?”
Kyu Jong: “All five of us haven’t been able to meet at one location yet because one or two is always out on another schedule. Young Saeng-hyung is in the same agency as me, so we meet often and give each other advice. He’s preparing for his solo album right now, and I accompanied him on his trip to the U.S. and met his album representatives; I also got to listen to his songs. I call Jung Min often and even monitor his stages. Sometimes I’ll even grab drinks with Hyun Joong-hyung.”
Q. “You must be worried about different things now that your solo activities are coming up.”
Kyu Jong: “Before, the members could carry me, but now I have no one to depend on and must take responsibility for myself. Of course I’m worried, but I’m sure I’ll improve myself through this opportunity. I’ve begun to see things that I didn’t notice when we were together. I’ll see the members doing their individual activities and wonder to myself where these different images they’re expressing were hiding. Every time I feel that they’ve grown. I feel really proud and become motivated to do better myself. I think we’ve become like a whip for one another.”
Q. “Aren’t there a lot of hardcore SS501 fans?”
Kyu Jong: “I once told my fans to restrict waiting outside our homes; in return, I would treat them better in concert or broadcast halls. Ever since then, there’s been a lot less sasaeng fans. My father often tells me to treat them well when they come to me, because who will be there 10 years from now. It’s true, don’t you think? I live feeling thankful that they like me.”
Q. “When will SS501’s album be released?”
Kyu Jong: “I’m thinking sometime near the year-end. Our agencies are all different, so it’s difficult to get things moving. Since all of our members are on the same page of remaining together, the results of that desire will come out soon.”

Returned as solo. Standing as solo with his own name ‘Park JungMin’ from group ‘SS501’, he has an extraordinary air on him. Even though with a unique mellow voice as before, his face shows quite a determination when saying ‘Not Alone’. ‘Not Alone’ is the title song for his first solo album, and Park Jungmin is also as such.
In place of the extreme word ‘suicide’, he used a different word to express, and immediately casually gave a bright smile. This is because he spread out his own wings, putting behind the glamorous title of ‘SS501’, and dumped the thought of being ‘alone’. No, actually that he realised there are things he will do by himself and many others he can do. In addition, this album is filled with songs that tell his own stories.
“Putting in my feelings for the lyrics, it would be a lie if I say that the lyrics for ‘Not Alone’ or ‘Do you know?’ are written 100% without bearing them in mind (his yearning for the members). But I hope even more to convey a hopeful message to those who are neglected in the society, those who felt ‘alone’ that there will always be someone by your side. I hope that you can decipher ‘Do you know?’ as the feelings of a couple who broke up. (laughs)”
In fact, ‘temporary’ as what he said, was not a forever farewell with SS501 members from the start. Park JungMin is still continuing his friendship with SS501 members, and planning to release album every year with the members with the right opportunity and time.
“We always talk about coming back together among our members. However rather than to cramp those unexpected work together, we wish to put aside 2~3 months to work on it and to release the album on a specific date every year. More than being virtual promise, this will be an album that fans will be waiting for like their valentine. The agencies that the members are under, all agreed to it. Only that, all of us are still busy with our own activities….”
“Even though I heard over thousands of melody but I wrote the lyrics at one go. Initially I wanted to write about thanking Mother Nature but then it seems like it’s too bombastic. (laughs) A song that cannot touch the singer will not be able to touch the hearts of the general public, that I learnt by experience, so in the end I wrote my true feelings within myself. It made me realize that I should be thankful for being ordinary/normal everyday.”
If title song ‘Not Alone’ is the continuity of SS501 music, then 2nd track ‘Do You Know?’ is a song that contains the passion and music style by his own name ‘Park JungMin’. In the alternative rock rhythm, the dreamy British-pop sound makes this song attractive, Park JungMin not only wrote the lyrics but also participated in all its production. Could it be because of the burden that he is ‘alone’ and not as 5, that made him even more hard working?
“Having to do everything on my own when it used to be done by 5 of us, I think that this is a process that anyone must go through when they develop/grow up. Even though now I am still at a stage of challenging it, wouldn’t I be able slowly and steadily find a style of my own? (laughs) Rather than bearing the thoughts of ‘I must do well’ ‘I must show something’, I think I will slowly become stronger. I must become stronger so that others can rely on me, I want to become a great person as such. I don’t think I will give up when it gets more difficult, I will think of the times when I learnt what I can do on my own.”
“That tired expression in your eyes always remain in me. Other than your breathe, I can’t see your image and can’t make you stay too (Not Alone Lyics)” during the difficult times of his. “Do you know? You are a special person to me (Do You Know? Lyrics)” says his confession. “Hm I am very happy, everything about you is great. Even as I sleep, sometimes I see you so made me excited. Which is why if we are together, my day is Christmas everyday” like this. His love towards his fans is the reason that brings forth a solo musician ‘Park JungMin’.
